1During the PIRMCCM Oversight Working Group (OWG) and UNDP joint mission to Samoa, members of the OWG visited two district hospitals (Lalomanu and Poutasi) along the southern coastline of Upolu.

Staff at each hospital offered a tour of facilities, spoke candidly regarding weekly operations, strengths and areas needing improvement, and shared stories of how the earthquake and tsunami of 2009 impacted their communities.

2With both district hospitals being run by qualified registered nurses, staff at both Lalomanu and Poutasi explained that doctors visit the district hospitals from Apia each Friday to offer consultation as well as provide medical attention to in-patients.

3The field visit to these two hospitals offered OWG members an opportunity to oversee the conditions of each facility and status of medical supplied, assess the capacity of staff, and gauge how health services are being administered in rural areas of Upolu, Samoa.
